6.1 Traditional flamenco music from Seville in Spain
Flamenco is the only music on Earth to be declared by the United Nations a “masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity.” It is a designation on par with World Heritage sites. Here, in the old city of Sevile in southern Spain where it was first played, I came across this performance at a tiny tapas bar. The singer performs “quejillo” a mournful complaint full of passion accompanied by a virtuoso guitarist and “palmas” - the hand clapping rhythm that goes back to its ancient gypsy roots.
